About Kenya

An independent Republic since l963, it is situated on the East African coast of Africa and is bisected by the Equator. The Kenyan Government is very conscious of conservation and areas are set aside regularly. This is the home of the "Big Five" - Elephant, Rhino, Cape Buffalo, Lion and Leopard.

In Kenya today people are mainly agriculturists, semi-pastoralists, fishermen and small businessmen. The coasts Swahili people have a distinct culture and their language is the lingua Franca of East Africa.

The contributions made to the world of prehistory by Kenya's archeological discoveries and prehistoric sites have been profound and recent discoveries of human species found at Lake Turkana, near Kenya's northern border, have gone a long way toward establishing the origins of man in Kenya. Although no longer slavers, sailing dhows are still a familiar sight along the coast. Today they trade in spices, perfumes, carpets, cloth and wooden carvings can still be seen tied to the wharf in the old port of Mombasa.

Kenya is an enchanting country and few places in the world can better its varied holiday attractions. It has flawless coastline and palm fringed casuarina-shaded silver beaches lapped by warm waters. Sunshine at the coast averages eight hours a day throughout the year. Specialist safaris in Kenya cater to almost every type of enthusiast. Year by year the network of cross-country roadways improves. New airports of the International standard permit the safe arrival and departure of visitors by an increasing number of the world's airlines. There are widely distributed landing grounds for light aircraft. Flying safaris have become increasingly popular allowing great distances to be covered in the minimum time. Kenya offers visitors the most sophisticated of facilities even in the heart of the bush country.

Through the years Kenya has played a portal role in the development of the continent. Today it continues that important role in the development of understanding through tourism.
