The country is divided into provinces, covering a total land area of 224,320 sq miles. The capital and main commercial center is Nairobi.
The Great Rift Valley, with steep sides, slices through the country from north to south, while right on the Equator stands Mt. Kenya, Africa's second highest with it's snowcapped peaks at 17,058ft.
In Kenya today people are mainly agriculturists, semi-pastoralists, fishermen and small businessmen. The coasts Swahili people have a distinct culture and their language is the lingua Franca of East Africa.
The contributions made to the world of prehistory by Kenya's archeological discoveries and prehistoric sites have been profound and recent discoveries of human species found at Lake Turkana, near Kenya's northern border, have gone a long way toward establishing the origins of man in Kenya. Although no longer slavers, sailing dhows are still a familiar sight along the coast. Today they trade in spices, perfumes, carpets, cloth and wooden carvings can still be seen tied to the wharf in the old port of Mombasa.
Through the years Kenya has played a portal role in the development of the continent. Today it continues that important role in the development of understanding through tourism.
